my Mission

At SafePath, we are dedicated to enhancing safety through innovative technology. Our goal is to create solutions that empower individuals and alleviate the financial and emotional burden from families.

The Why

Falls and medical emergencies are especially dangerous for people who live alone because help may not arrive in time. This problem is personal to me—my grandparents live far away, and if something happened to them, there might be no one nearby to help. I created SafePath to explore how robotics and artificial intelligence can be used to provide constant monitoring and faster emergency response for seniors and physically challenged individuals.

The How

SafePath is a fully autonomous robot that navigates indoor environments using LiDAR, distance sensors, and an AI vision camera. A Raspberry Pi and REV Control Hub process sensor data in real time, allowing the robot to avoid obstacles, recognize people, and detect when someone has fallen or is not moving. When a possible emergency is detected, the robot stops, visually confirms the situation, and triggers alerts to emergency contacts or 911.

My Technology

SafePath combines robotics, artificial intelligence, and real-time sensor processing to operate as a fully autonomous system. It is powered by a Raspberry Pi and a REV Control Hub, which handle decision-making, motor control, and communication between sensors. The robot uses LiDAR to map its surroundings and multiple distance sensors to safely navigate indoor environments and avoid obstacles like walls and furniture. An AI vision camera analyzes faces and body positions to help determine when a person may have fallen or is not moving. Software written in Python and Java allows SafePath to combine sensor data, drive autonomously, and respond to possible emergencies. Together, these technologies enable SafePath to continuously monitor its environment and demonstrate how intelligent robotics can improve safety for people who live alone.

Long-Term Impact

The Price Barrier of Assisted Living

Assisted living has become financially out of reach for most families, with the national average cost climbing to nearly $5,900 per month, or about $70,800 per year. For many seniors, this price tag alone makes long‑term care inaccessible, and that doesn’t even include the additional medical expenses that can arise from falls, injuries, or delayed assistance. A single accident can lead to thousands of dollars in hospital bills, rehabilitation, and follow‑up care. By contrast, SafePath offers a one‑time purchase that can replace the need for a full‑time nurse and dramatically reduce the risk of costly emergencies. Instead of spending tens of thousands of dollars every year, families can invest in a reliable, always‑available monitoring system that keeps their loved ones safe without draining their savings.

Afforable Senior Care

Beyond the financial burden, families are also struggling with the growing shortage of healthcare workers, especially those trained to support elderly individuals living alone. Many people simply don’t have the time or resources to provide constant supervision, and the limited number of available nurses means that even those who can afford care may not be able to secure it consistently. SafePath helps bridge this gap by offering continuous, automated monitoring that never gets tired, distracted, or overbooked. With the robot handling routine safety checks and fall detection, nurses and caregivers can be redirected to patients who need hands‑on medical attention, while seniors at home still receive dependable oversight. This makes SafePath not just a cost‑effective solution, but a practical response to a nationwide caregiving shortage.
